Something You Know

Something You Know

Taught my first class of my newest residency. NYCity Explorers is my host and I am working with students ages 2-6 years old. The students, dancing scholars as I call them are excited to join in on their new class. I am introducing to them my dance technique of “Cultural Kinesis” which I began to develop in 2007. A technique where students… are taught how to explore dance and further, how to explore a variety of dance styles and look at them, engage in them, experience them, and appreciate them as cultural experiences and comparing the styles to each other identifying similarities and differences and what makes them unique and at times, what makes these dances them.

I adore working with children. And especially this age group. The students are my daughters ages and although I have worked with this age group throughout my life as a dancer, my days with my daughters are filled with exploration, discovery, surprise, and wonder and when I am with these children I feel that bountifully and magnificently. And these are other people’s children! And I enjoy hearing their questions, and seeing their faces light up witha new move or with the opportunity they have to share their own. What would a world be without dance? Where would any of us be without that form of communication. Living, saying, swaying, loving, hurting healing … through dance. Let movement be something you know. ~Yauri
